Ever since the introduction of Flash, the use of animated GIFs has kind of gone on the wayside. They are clunky, don’t have smooth animation, and look prehistoric by nature.

That being said, the use of animated GIFs in a very smart and creative way can add mood and just a hint of animation to make them stand out from normal promotional web images.

Take these series of movie poster images that Disney recently had created to promote their upcoming adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into The Woods.

These images are used to introduce the various cast of characters, each having just a touch of subtle use of animation to the renderings that helps define mood and a mythical quality to them that prove a very creative solution and use of an aging internet technology.

Let your eyes adjust to each image and see if you can pick out the tiny details.

Well done Magic Kingdom!
